Distinguished and Famous people from Byron Bay

🏅 Bob McTavish

Surfboard designer Bob McTavish became closely associated with Byron Bay through the boards and business bearing his name. A significant figure in the move towards shorter surfboards, he also continued developing longboard designs. His career combines surfing, practical experimentation and manufacturing: a board has to work in the water, however persuasive its promises on land. His workshop and design enterprise became part of Byron's working surf culture.

🤝 David Bradbury

Documentary filmmaker David Bradbury has made Byron itself the subject of his work. Loggerheads grew from his experience as a local resident confronted by tree clearing near his property. The Battle for Byron, released in 1996, examined the community struggle over the town's development and preservation. Known more broadly for politically challenging documentaries, Bradbury brought that approach to arguments unfolding close to home. These films preserve some of the tensions behind the familiar holiday images of beaches and an easygoing coastal lifestyle.
